Tariq Mehmood
Chairman, Co-founder

Tariq Mehmood is the Chairman and the co-founder of The Hong Kong Society for Asylum-seekers and Refugees (HKSASR). He has been a veteran advocate for the rights of the group for more than 10 years. Being a former asylum-seeker himself, he knows the challenges they are facing and vows to provide the best support to the group.

Isabella NG
Co-founder

Isabella NG is the co-founder of the society. She is also an academic in the Department of Asian and Policy Studies in The Education University of Hong Kong. Her research area includes migration, gender and media studies. Trained as an ethnographer, she applied public anthropological approach in her research as well as advocacy work. She has provided expert input on asylum-seekers and refugees issues to EU and OHCHR.

Sharice Choi
Secretary

Sharice Choi is the secretary of the HKSASR. She has been an active volunteer since 2015. She helps manage the weekly playgroup and activities, provides educational supports and advocates for the rights of asylum seekers and refugees. Sharice has a passion for asylum seekers, refugees, and migration issues.

Whit Yeung
Treasurer

Whit Yeung is the treasurer and one of the founding members of the HKSASR. Isabella has been her tutor in university and this is her starting point of HKSASR. She was a Visual Arts major so naturally she has been involved in some design works for the society. She believed that no matter you are interested in volunteering job or any other enquiries, this place is full of caring and friendly people and there is nothing to worry about.

Alex Chan
Executive committee member

Alex Chan is the executive committee member of the HKSASR. He is a lecturer in Soka University, teaching Sociology of Globalisation and transnational migration. He was previously teaching in the Education University of Hong Kong on Media, International Relations, and Sociology. A renowned journalist in Malaysia, he received his PhD in Sociology of Media in Doshisha University in Japan. He has been actively advocating for the asylum-seekers and refugees issues since the society's inception.

Herbary Cheung
Executive committee member

Herbary Cheung is the executive committee member of the HKSASR. He joined HKSASR in 2019 and working closely with the team and members. He believes the core value of the society---"power in unity" will connect and bond everyone together and contribute to justice and peace in the world.

Sai Htong Kham
Executive committee member

Sai Htong Kham is the executive committee member of the HKSASR. He joined HKSASR  in his second year of the university in 2015 and has been an active member since. He got to help out with some volunteering work and organizing some activities for the society’s members. As a foreign student seeking to belong, he finds this society closest to home. It’s been a great and meaningful experience since day one and still continue to be.

Sai Hkur
Executive committee member

Sai Hkur serves as an executive committee member. He is a change agent who has made significant contributions as an English instructor at the Burma Study Center in Chiang Mai, Thailand. After relocating to Hong Kong, he found a sense of community at HKSASR, a place where he volunteers and builds friendships. Joining the society has been a transformative experience for him, allowing him to connect with others while continuing his passion for service. From the moment he arrived, HKSASR has played a vital role in helping him feel at home in this new city.

Vivien Tang

Executive committee member

Vivien Tang serves as an executive committee member of the HKSASR. Since 2020, she has been an active volunteer in activities, event management, and sourcing for resources for our members. Her passion lies in serving the vulnerable communities and improving their well-being.

Ryan Lai

Executive committee member

Ryan serves as an executive committee member at HKSASR, having begun his volunteer work in 2023. With a background in business management and marketing, he brings strategic perspective to the association, contributing innovative ideas that improve its operations. He finds joy in making a positive impact, and the smiles on the children's faces bring him satisfaction, fuelling his dedication to helping others.
